STRIPE-THROATED HERMIT(Species Account Blog #27)

TAXONOMIC TREE:

  • ORDER: Caprimulgiformes,
  • FAMILY: Trochilidae,
  • BINOMIAL NAME: Phaethornis striigularis

The noticeably loud wingbeats of this tiny hermit often alert you to its presence before you see it. Males also sing together at leks for much of the year—frequently for 10-15 minutes at a time—making them easier to locate. Stripe-throated Hermits are commonly found in the understory of a variety of humid habitats and fly in repeated circuits to feed on the nectar of scattered flowers. In both Costa Rica and Panama, some individuals nectar rob from the base of Scutellaria or Pavonia flowers. (from Birds of the World)

Stripe-throated Hermit Distribution Map (from Birds of the World)

Found more often in mid-elevations and lowlands, this species ranges from Mexico to Peru. I first observed it in Quintana Roo, MX, and then in Belize and again in Guatemala, all sightings with NO PHOTOGRAPHS. Finally, at Rancho Naturalista in Costa Rica I was able to snap a few images of one as it fed on the heliconias.

ABOUT THE SITE

With a primary focus on birds, each blog series has it’s own unique look at the wildlife and wild places encountered at different locations that I have visited around the world.

ABOUT ME

I earned my college degree in biology, a foundation that shaped not only how I see the world, but how I’ve spent my life sharing it with others. For more than 40 years, I taught and led in public education, helping students discover the wonder woven into every corner of the natural world. That same drive has carried me through decades of citizen science and conservation work. As an active member of the Modesto Camera Club, I’ve developed a photographic practice that blends natural history with visual artistry, and my award‑winning images have been featured across the Internet on dozens of sites and field‑oriented platforms. This blog brings together my passions for birding, conservation, and storytelling.
