RED-TAILED HAWK(Species Account Blog #97)

TAXONOMIC TREE:

  • BINOMIAL NAME: Buteo jamaicensis
    • SUBSPECIES IN COSTA RICA: B. j. costaricensis Ridgway, 1874. Resident in highlands of Costa Rica and w. Panamá [type locality = Costa Rica]

One of the most widespread and commonly observed birds of prey in North America, the Red-tailed Hawk (hereafter Red-tail) occupies a broad range of habitats from central Alaska south to Venezuela and east to the Virgin Islands. (from Birds of the World)

In Costa Rica we observed 3 Red-tailed Hawks in the Talamanca Highlands near Miriam’s Restaurant.
