FASCIATED TIGER-HERON – (Species Account Blog #80)
TAXONOMIC TREE:

- FAMILY: Ardeidae,
- BINOMIAL NAME: Tigrisoma fasciatum
The Fasciated Tiger-Heron is a medium-sized heron and is often seen along fast-flowing rocky rivers and streams, usually at higher elevations than other tiger-herons. Almost always seen singly, standing on a rock in the middle or on the edge of a river. Adults are gray with fine black barring down the entire head, neck, and wings. (from Birds of the World)
SIMILAR SPECIES
It is distinguished from the Bare Throated Tiger-Heron by it smaller size, feathered white throat, and dark sides and under parts.

In Costa Rica we observed a single Faciated Tiger-Heron near the Arenal Observatory.
