About this Species

The Yellow-throated Vireo (Vireo flavifrons) is a small passerine bird species that belongs to the Vireonidae family. It has a distinct yellow throat and breast, olive-green upperparts, and white wing bars. The species measures around 12 cm in length and has a wingspan of approximately 20 cm. The Yellow-throated Vireo is a common species in Belize, where it resides in deciduous and mixed deciduous forests, and also in mangroves and second-growth areas.

The Yellow-throated Vireo is a neotropical migrant that breeds in North America, from southern Canada to the eastern United States. During the non-breeding season, they migrate to Central America and northern South America, including Belize. The species typically arrives in Belize in late March to early April and departs in September to October. During the breeding season, the species feeds on insects, spiders, and other arthropods, while it primarily feeds on fruit and nectar during the non-breeding season.

In Belize, the Yellow-throated Vireo is considered a common resident bird species. They are relatively easy to spot due to their distinctive yellow throat and breast and can be seen flitting through the trees in their preferred habitats. While the species is not considered to be globally threatened, habitat loss due to deforestation and other human activities has led to a decline in their numbers in some regions.

ABOUT ME

Through my lens and prose I hope to instill a greater sense of awe, compassion and inspiration as I discover new creatures, explore interesting habitats, and gain wisdom about the natural world that’s all around us. It is my hope that readers are motivated to learn more about our environment and its inhabitants, and become passionate advocates for conservation.

I earned my college degree in biology, a foundation that shaped not only how I see the world, but how I’ve spent my life sharing it with others. For more than 35 years, I worked in education as both a teacher and administrator, guiding students through the wonders of science and the joy of discovery. That same spirit of curiosity has carried me through decades of volunteer work in citizen science and conservation. This blog brings together my passions for birding, conservation, and storytelling.
